More than showing a video……

You want to show a video and have always used Windows Media Player. May I suggest you use the SMART Video Player. There are two features that make this a much better option.

To OPEN SMART Video Player either open the SMART Technologies folder in the All Programs menu. Expand the SMART Tools menu and select the Video Player at the bottom of the list OR Click on the Notebook icon in the Windows Notification Area in the lower right corner of the Desktop, click on the Video Player option.

The two features that make this a great option for video are found in the Settings menu – Video Player Settings. The default setting for “pause when tool(s) lifted” means that if it is selected, lifting a pen or the eraser will cause the video to “pause”. Replacing the tool will allow the video to resume from the stopped point.

The setting that makes this player really special is the third option in the Video Player Settings. When selected it allows you to write on the video and then the ink will fade out in the amount of time that you enter in the settings panel so no need to erase annotations before restarting the video.

Other options in the setting allow for the video player to stay on top no matter what other programs/files are open and to remove the toolbar when in full screen mode.

Windows Media Player won’t do any of these things so try SMART Media Player tomorrow!! Choose your options in the Settings then File – Open to bring up the video you want to view.

Import PowerPoint files!

You can show PowerPoint files on your SMART Board. When you open PowerPoint from a link or attached file in Notebook, the PowerPoint will open in “show” mode. You can use the menu to add pages without going back to “design” mode. You can also add ink which you can save into the .ppt file.

That being said, I encourage you to consider “importing” the PowerPoint into a Notebook file. You can also add Word and Adobe .pdf files as well as your own new content and graphics for a complete presentation/interaction file. (See directions in the previous post for the Word and Adobe .pdf files.)

The steps:
All Notebook files should be closed. Then open a new empty Notebook file. Go to FILE – IMPORT and locate the PowerPoint file you want to Import. OPEN. You do nothing else. You will see Notebook open the PowerPoint file and move down through each slide converting to pages in Notebook. PowerPoint will then close and your empty Notebook file will now have a page for every slide in the PowerPoint. All text is editable (double-click to edit or single-click and drag to move or use resize corner circle) and all graphics are objects to move and resize as you want. Links will still work. The one conversion that does not come through is animations. You can now insert more pages where you want and add your own content on the pages imported.

This means that when looking for content on the Internet, you can use both Notebook files and PowerPoint files that you find. Happy hunting!!

What do I do with my Word and pdf files?

Option 1) Open the pdf and Word files and annotate with pens as needed. You will have to use the Transparent Background tool or the Ink Layer to accomplish this.

Option 2) Bring any Word files or pdf files into a Notebook file. It takes a little work to bring them in but you then have all the Notebook tools and Gallery images to add to the material. I like this option because there is no need to open multiple programs, everything needed for class is in one file and easy to find in the page sorter or with links.

* One way to bring text from Word is to simply highlight the desired portion, copy, and then move to a Notebook page and paste. All text is editable.

* Another option is to use the screen capture tool. You can take snapshots in Word or pdf. These will automatically go to the same or next page in the open Notebook file, depending on your choice. Open the camera tool.

Go to the Word or pdf file. Notice the Capture toolbar stays on top. Select the Rectangle camera, go to a corner of the portion you want to select. Hold down the left-click mouse button and drag diagonally across the text. Release the mouse button. A copy of your selection will go into the page of your Notebook file you chose – the current page or the next page. This is not editable but you can use the white-out pen or the white rectangle (see earlier post) to cover anything you want to change.

* If you have a large amount of material in Word or pdf, the previous options take time. A time saver for lots of pages uses the Print Capture option. When Notebook was installed on the computer, a printer was added to the Printer list. It will be called “SMART Notebook Print Capture” or “SMART Notebook Document Writer” depending on the Notebook version installed. To use this printer, in Word or Adobe Reader, go to File-Print and choose the SMART Notebook printer. Select the page or pages as you would if printing to a physical printer. (If you “print” 5 pages, you will have 5 new Notebook pages.)

If using the SMART Notebook Print Capture version, the pages will be “printed” to the current Notebook file. (If no file is open, a new Notebook file will be opened.) These pages are not editable but you can use the white-out pen or the white rectangle (see earlier post) to cover anything you want to change.

If using the SMART Notebook Document Writer version, you will get a window asking you to check one of two options.

The first option will work like this: the pages will be “printed” to the current Notebook file exactly as they appear in the original. (If no file is open, a new Notebook file will be opened.) These pages are not editable but you can use the white-out pen or the white rectangle (see earlier post) to cover anything you want to change.

The second option: the pages will be “printed” to the current Notebook file but may not be exactly as they appear in the original. However, all images will be movable/re-sizeable and text will be editable. (Remember to double-click text to make it editable.)

I hope you will experiment with these options and will find the option that works best for you!

Fractional parts

When I saw this tool my first thought was that teaching/learning fractions would have been so much easier with this application. If you have the 30-day free trial or have purchased Math Tools, try this.

Open Measurement Tools:

Open the Compass tool.

Consider making one circle and cloning it before dividing each in different sections – maybe 2, 4, 8 or 2, 5, 10. You can select each section and change the color properties as you want. Dragging two fourths over one half to demonstrate equality is powerful in student eyes!!

Consider making two or three circles the same division and then using parts to add or subtract to demonstrate or practice the need for whole and mixed numbers.

Got White-Out?

“White-out” has been for covering mistakes in a document. In Notebook, you can use “white-out” for that and more.

To make the white-out pen: Click on the pen tool on the menu. Select one of the colors you won’t miss when you make it white. With that color selected, press the “Properties” tab on the side bar. You need to change the “Fill Effects” and the “Line Style” to white. Also with the “Line Style” chosen, make the thickness of the pen wider. Be sure to click “Save Tool Properties” at the bottom of the Properties tab. This will mean that the white pen is always there unless you change it again.

To make the white rectangle: on the Shapes tool select the rectangle and then change the “Fill Effects” and The “Line Style” to white. Be sure to click “Save Tool Properties” at the bottom of the Properties tab.

Now, think “Hide and Reveal”. Use the white pen with a white background. “White-out” some text or numerical answer or piece of information. To draw attention during class, erase the “white-out” at the appropriate time to reveal the text or numbers below! If the text to be covered is large, use the white rectangle to cover and slide aside to reveal the text!

*If you are fond of a colored background, say orange or turquoise, then make your pen and rectangle the same color to use as your reveal tool.
**You will have to remember what you “hid” so you can do the big “reveal”.

The Projector Remote is for more than ON/OFF

Each button is a toggle (on-off-on-off….) – The remote pictured is from EPSON, however, most remotes have at least one of these features!
Press each to turn on, press again to turn off.
Freeze – when “on” the word “FREEZE” appears in upper right corner of window.
The screen is frozen but computer display can be used and nothing on computer will appear on the SMART Board. Use this when you want an “Intro” Activity on Board for student to complete but you can then take attendance or answer and email while students work.

A/V Mute – when “on” the display is blank. You can work on your computer and nothing will show on SMART Board. Use this when you want to hide the light for less than 30 minutes*.
*If you will not use the projector for more than 30 minutes, turn the projector off.

Gray Space looks like margins when I “extend page”

The most frequently asked question recently is about the gray space that looks like a margin when the page is extended. This is not a new feature but with the latest versions of Notebook (10.7.144 and 10.8) it is now the default. It’s called “Entire Page” and is useful when you want to view the entire page. Maybe you downloaded a Notebook file made by someone else. Using this feature will allow you to see all parts of a page.

To go back to the view we are used to with no gray space, VIEW – ZOOM – Page Width. The page will now completely fill the Notebook Window. You will have to use the scroll bar to see the lower portion of any page but graphics and text will appear at their maximum designed size. This is probably the best for class viewing.

To return to “Entire Page” VIEW – ZOOM – Entire Page.

Store frequently used objects and pages in My Content

If you frequently use an object from the Gallery or Toolkit, or you find yourself creating the same object or text over and over again, place it in the My Content folder in the Gallery Tab. It will then be available for quick retrieval anytime you work on that computer.

For math, a number line or xy-coordinate plane can be placed in My Content and you will never have to search for it again! If you want to place a page in My Content see 3rd image below! Your monthly/weekly calendar or the weekly spelling words can be saved for instant access.

New Tool!

Do you wish for a quick way to erase all the ink you just added to a page because you want to save the changes to other pages? A new tool allows for just that – first, right-click on the Tools Toolbar to bring up the “Customize Toolbar” window. Locate the “Clear Ink” tool and drag it to the Toolbar. Anytime you want to only “Clear Ink” on a page, just press. (Remember “Undo” if you do this in error.)
